About The San Benito County Arts Council

The San Benito County Arts Council (SBCAC) is a California non-profit corporation, incorporated on January 2, 2006.  The impetus to start the Arts Council was given to the "founders" through a consensus of individual artists and arts organizations and San Benito County in 2005.  The Arts Council was formed by ten incorporators, including the founders, and is governed by a Board of Trustees.  The Charter of the Arts Council is to foster the arts in San Benito County, at all levels of involvement and in all artistic disciplines.

PURPOSE

Promote diversity, quality, and involvement in the arts for the people of San Benito County

Encourage and assist cultural and artistic growth

Provide access to the arts for all residents

Establish a favorable climate for artists to live and work

HISTORY OF COMMUNITY CULTURAL PLANNING

In April of 2005, local art enthusiast, Mike Smith, organized a group of 27 local residents, including representation from the County Board of Supervisors, City of Hollister, and Gavilan College to pool resources and assess the needs for promotion of the arts in San Benito County. The new group banded together actors and painters, poets and photographers, from large and small cultural organizations and various ethnic groups to show what local artists are capable of, and why arts in San Benito County is so important.

During these early meetings with arts advocates and non-attenders, it was discovered that there are a lot of organizations that have plans for music festivals, theater programs, and other artistic events, but no one body to provide an all inclusive "Calendar of Events", one of the first goals set for the newly developing Arts Council.

After about eight months of working with arts-minded peers, assessing needs, collecting existing information, and collecting new information from interviews and focus groups, paperwork was submitted to the Secretary of State office in San Francisco to establish the San Benito County Arts Council as a nonprofit corporation.
